sometime around the late seventies, my own dad would come home from work. eagerly anticipating his arrival, we'd finally hear the motorcycle pull into the driveway. out the door we'd go and take our places: my dad in the middle, my older sister holding tight on the back, and little me on the front. we'd go for a round or two around our suburban yard, and if we were extra good, maybe a ride around the whole block.
watching my son tonight, i was transported back in time to the hum of the engine, sitting in my dad's lap, the fresh evening air on my face. and i smiled.
